Crime Stoppers is a community-driven program designed to assist local law enforcement in the fight against crime. By bridging the gap between the public and law enforcement, Crime Stoppers empowers citizens to take action and overcome the two greatest barriers to community involvement: fear and apathy.
Crime Stoppers provides a safe and effective way for citizens to make their communities safer without putting themselves at risk. By removing the fear of exposure and offering a meaningful incentive, the program ensures that crucial information reaches those who can act on it. This collaboration between the community and law enforcement strengthens public safety and accountability.
By supporting Crime Stoppers, either through submitting a tip or contributing financially, you become an active partner in the fight against crime. Together, we can make a lasting difference in protecting our neighborhoods and ensuring justice is served.
The Crime Stoppers movement began in 1976 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, following the tragic homicide of a young gas station attendant. The lead detective on the case had run out of investigative leads, but he believed that members of the public held information that could help solve the crime.
In a groundbreaking effort, the detective partnered with a local television station to air a reenactment of the crime. He established an anonymous tip line and offered a cash reward for information leading to an arrest. Shortly after the broadcast, the detective received a tip that directly resulted in the arrest of those responsible for the crime.
This remarkable cooperation between law enforcement, the media, and the community not only solved a case that had appeared unsolvable but also laid the foundation for the first official Crime Stoppers program.
Today, that idea has grown into a global network of more than 1,200 Crime Stoppers organizations operating around the world.
